Hey guys, got a quick question:

Currently, the rules state that activating a magic item is a standard action unless the item in question specifically states otherwise. I am looking to design an item that can be used as a free action, but there are no rules on how to go about this.

The item in qustion is and item of Swift Girding. The character in question would normally walk around in just clothes, and don armor immedatly at the start of combat. Currently, for a Command Word Swift Girding, the cost is 1800gp (1*1*1800).

My first thought:

In order for the spell to be cast as a free action, it would have to be a quickened spell. The item, if created with the quicken spell, could be used as a swift action. The item would now cost 81000 (5*9*1800). While I think this works, this is so rediculously expensive that I don't ever forsee being able to use this (as the only cheeper way would be a 0 lvl spell, which is... worthless)

Second thought:

Add a modifier cost. Now, I am worried about how to do this, because it is possible for this to be broken (magic missile, swift action, every round. low level spell, free damage. you get the idea). It could be applied to other spells for much more game breaking scenereos.

There is one item that comes to mind as a free action. Boots of Haste. They have 10 total rounds that they can be used per day, and activated as 'free' action. They cost 12,000gp. If you had an item that was simply CL 10 Haste (for the 10 rnds) as a standard action, 1/day, they would be 10,800gp. So there is no real help from that item. They also effect only you (which is what I would be shooting for as this particular item).

Third thought:

We come together and make a price for this one item. It will be a one off case instead of a set rule that can be used with other things. I think I would be willing to pay up to 10k for this item, as, while I can see the mechanical benefits, I will be using it as a roleplay thing. I already get full movement speed out of my armor, and Check Penalty is only 1, so wearing my armor doesn't hinder me much.

Thoughts?
