As drawn on the map, Orlean city covers ~40 square miles (the equivalent of a ~6.5 mile square).  The farms around the metropolis spread out for another ~300 square miles.

We set the population at 30,000 souls.

Based on the size of the area, I would suggest the following figures:

Permanent population of Orelan within the city walls: 30,000
Transient population (merchants, sailors, mercs, exploreres, etc) ~20,000
Farm population:  15,000

Total Population of Orlean = 65,000

The farm lands are divided into two types.

1) The Noble Estates:  These estates tend to be 640 acres (1 square mile).  They tend to be close to the city, and along the main roads.  Some of them produce argiculture products for sale at market, but most are simply private playgrounds for the nobles.  Each has about 100 souls who work these areas as guards, farmers, and their families. There are about 35 of these, accouting for ~1/3 of the farmland population.

2) The farming communities:  the average size for a family farm is about 20 acres, with 3d12 farms per community.  Each farm has a population of about 10 (between the farmer and his/;her family, and a few hired hands).  These farms tend to have small thorps associated with them with services such as Inns, stabling, blacksmithing, etc.  There are about 40 of these, accounting for the rest of the rural population.

If these numbers don't work for anyone, please reply.  It just means I need to modify the pysical size of the city and farmland.

I am terrible with big numbers. 30k? sure. I dont know if that is a lot for a midevil society or not, so we will go with it!
